As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved trees.  On our street in Compton, California our home had two of the tallest trees in our neighborhood.  These trees brought great joy.  Shade in the summer.  Beauty year round. Much work in autumn, as my brothers and I raked leaves, which wasn’t always a joy. These two tall trees were eventually cut down. The City of Compton decided they were a hazard due to the roots which broke up the concrete sidewalks.  Many mourned the loss of these trees. I can’t recall anyone mourning the loss of concrete.

In harmony with Tao,

the sky is clear and spacious,

the earth is solid and full,

all creatures flourish together,

content with the way they are,

endlessly repeating themselves,

endlessly renewed.

Chapter 39 – Tao Te Ching

The Two Ways

Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
    or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
    planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
