Tao Te Ching

Meditation: Tao Te Ching

What is essential? What is worthy of our attention.

Be still. Know. Be.

anthony glenn miller

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10

OM

Meditation: Om

Shine One Inner Light.

Be still and know the All One.

To be still and know.

Jesus shared:

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.

John 14:21

Stillness

Meditation: Stillness

The term meditation in the east is called contemplation in the west. What meditation and contemplation have in common is a movement into stillness. Any discipline that moves beyond words and images, and honors the still small voice within, is worthy of our time and attention. The beauty is in the stillness. In this new year, may you daily honor the stillness that calls deep within your soul and spirit.

Enter the stillness. Enter the secret place of the Most High. Walk in beauty.

Elijah Meets the Eternal One at Horeb

“Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

I Kings 19:11-13

Be Still

Meditation: Be Still

Along the WAY, still.

Together, silent and still.

The WAY of Jesus.

Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind,

and said to the sea,

Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased,

and there was a dead calm.

Mark 4:39

Tao (26)

Meditation:  Stillness

In stillness, we learn the right moves.

In silence, we learn to offer words mindfully.

In solitude, we learn to be with others.

A great country remains receptive and still,
as does a rich and fertile land.
The gentle overcomes the strong
with stillness and receptivity.

Chapter 61 – Tao Te Ching

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
    he restores my soul.

Inner-scape

Meditation: Inner-scape

Breathe.  Be still.  Know.

Mass culture understands the world primarily based on material circumstances.  Where I live.  Where I work.  What I wear. Who are my friends?  Who are my enemies?  To what groups do I belong?  The list goes on.  The problem with this is that the ego absorbs and identifies with this data and constructs a false self.  The cult of celebrity, compulsive shopping, respectable middle-class materialism, and a hosts of addictions – to food, clothing, drugs, and other material things – confirms the presence of the false self upon which consumer capitalist culture depends.

The true self is spontaneous, mysterious, and beautiful.  The true self unfolds and reveals itself as we tend to our inner life.  This is the message of mystics from every religious traditions.  This embrace of the true self is at the heart of the teachings of shamans, sages, poets, prophets, mystics, and all who honor the Eternal Way.

The inward journey cannot be forced.  The inward journey is a surrender to what is rather than the construction of a self. Babies, animals, indigenous people, and Nature itself teaches us to honor the true self.  Just be.  After years of unconscious enmeshment in consumer culture it’s important to be intentional about the process of surrender that lets the true self emerge.  Meditation, contemplation, and other spiritual disciplines can aid the process of letting go of the false self in order that your true self may emerge.  The journey is inward.  Learn what this means.

Breathe.  Be still.  Know.

Weapons of war are instruments of fear,
and are not favoured by the wise,
who use them only when there is no choice,
for peace and stillness are dear to their hearts,
and victory causes them no rejoicing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters…

Joy & Stillness

Meditation: Joy & Stillness

The rain is coming down steadily as I write these words on a summer day in early June.  Who knows what the weather will be like when this meditation is actually posted online in late June?  The weather is constantly changing.  Our environment, feelings, body and mind are ever-changing as well.  The discipline of practicing silence and stillness allows us to enter the flow of the Eternal.

In the stillness, know.  In the silence, grow.  Enjoy the journey.

That which once seemed full,
may later empty seem,
yet still be un-exhausted.
That which once seemed straight
may seem twisted when seen once more;
intelligence can seem stupid,
and eloquence seem awkward;
movement may overcome the cold,
and stillness, heat,
but stillness in movement
is the way of the Tao.

Love & Stillness III

Meditation: Love and Stillness III

What do I want?  Enter stillness and know.

What must I be?  Enter stillness and you are.

What must I do?  Enter stillness and all is done.

Like the sheltered, fertile valley,
the meditative mind is still,
yet retains its energy.

Love & Stillness II

Meditation: Love and Stillness II

Take me to a place beyond words.

Take me to a place where beauty is heard.

Take me to a place deep within.

Join me in a place where loving-kindness never ends.
