Earlier in 2013 I spent several months at New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California. New Camaldoli is a Benedictine order of monks. Their life is framed by work and prayer. They combine life in community with the spaciousness of solitude. In December 2012, my dad died during my initial visit to New Camaldoli. The community of prayer at New Camaldoli was a gift during this time of loss. I returned to Los Angeles to be with family, reunite with friends and offer the eulogy. After my dad’s memorial, I returned to New Camaldoli. Upon my return to Big Sur, I realized the importance of Nature in a fresh way. The beauty of Nature and the healing power of silence became my sanctuary. This beauty remains in my heart and mind. An inner sanctuary amidst the hard landscape of LA. The healing continues.

Nature’s way is to say but little;

High winds are made still with the turn of the tide,

And rarely last all morning, nor heavy rain, all day.

Therefore, when talking, remember also to be silent and still.

Chapter 23 – Tao Te Ching

God called the dry land Earth,

And the waters that were gathered together he called Seas.

And God saw that it was good.
