One can only be true to one’s self if we’re able to know the true self. Babies and animals model spontaneity and play as a window into authentic living. Too much reflection can block the expression of our true self. Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel) wrestled artfully with true communication, in contrast to the false self to which the majority bows and prays:
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said:
“The words of the prophets are
Written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence.”
Be still and know your true self. Be still and know in the silence. Emerge authentically, day by day.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
